On Tuesday, the Dothan native and Northside Methodist Academy golf standout became the Class 3A champion at the state tournament in Florence at the Robert Trent Jones at the Shoals golf course. Also locally, Elba’s Jay Wilson took the crown in Class 1A-2A.Crowder, a senior, shot a 9-hole, 1-over par 39 on Tuesday for a 2-under par 108 total for the 27 holes.
“Of course, I wanted to end with a state championship and did that,” Crowder said. “This is Northside’s first time ever going to state for golf out of the eight or nine years that they have had a team and I’m glad to be a part of it. “I approached it like any other tournament and just played my game,” Crowder said. “I knew it was going to be my last high school round, so I just wanted to have some fun and play Mason golf.”“The course is in very nice condition and that makes it a lot easier to trust shots, I guess you would say,” Crowder said. “I was hitting the ball really well. I don’t think I really gave myself bad looks on any putts.
Wilson shot a second-round, nine-hole 2-under par 34 Tuesday after shooting a 3-under par 69 on Monday for a 5-under 103 total. He won by five strokes over Luke Davis of Athens Bible. “It feels good to win it and at this age still got some years ahead of me. I feel like I can go out there and compete with the best of them around my age. I’ve just got to keep my game going.
