Former president Donald Trump and President Biden appear in the first presidential debate of the 2024 elections at CNN's studios in Atlanta on Thursday. Thursday’s presidential debate began with no handshake, and it got worse from there. On one side of the stage was President Biden, who needed to persuade Americans that things are better than they believe them to be at home and abroad.
Mr. Biden had the tougher job given what polls say about Americans’ sentiment. A skilled rhetorician at the top of her game would have struggled. Mr. Biden, an 81-year-old reportedly battling a cold, was not on the top of his game. On whose watch were more American soldiers killed while fighting abroad? If one could see past his rhetorical struggles, Mr.
He avoided questions on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and whether he would endorse a Palestinian state by arguing that foreign crises simply would not occur under his watch. Mr. Putin would never have invaded Ukraine, and Hamas would never have attacked Israel. No tough choices need be contemplated. And, when met with inconvenient facts, Mr. Trump simply made them disappear.
He had his moments, as when he forcefully explained a crucial difference between him and Mr. Trump on reproductive rights: If congressional Republicans pass a nationwide ban on abortion, he will veto it. His opponent, he said, would sign it. But Mr. Biden’s task on Thursday was to wipe away worries that he has lost one too many steps to run the country for another term. He ended up raising more concerns than he dispelled.
