Nothing beats the 'it-seemed-like-a-good-idea-at-the-time' defense

Head coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers walks off the field after warm ups before the NFC Championship Game.coach Kyle Shanahan has doubled down on a decision that led to his team’s elimination in the postseason.

The play in question was a decision to punt to the Los Angeles Rams while on their 45-yard line on a 4th-and-2 with less than 10 minutes left in the game. The Niners were up 17-14 at the time, and even went as far to look like they were going for first down before letting the play clock wind down to 0.

On its own, it’s a pretty conservative decision, but Rams coach Sean McVay made Shanahan’s decision look even more so. The play prior, Los Angeles challenged whether fullback Kyle Juszczyk fumbled the ball. After the challenge failed, the Rams' final timeout of the game was taken away, also meaning that the Niners could have very easily run out the clock if they successfully converted the first down.

Instead, the Niners pretended to go for it, took the five-yard penalty for delay of game and then punted — so technically the punt wasn’t taken from the 50-yard line, but the decision to punt was made while the team was on the Rams’ 45-yard line. A couple days removed, at the 49ers' season-end press conference, Shanahan stood by this choice.

Shanahan says that he still feels the decision to punt from midfield on 4th-and-2 was the right one and that he'd do it again if he didn't know the result

Given his lack of imagination for the offense in the second half, it probably *was* one of his better calls.
