Kaepernick and others reportedly felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery.

Nike Inc. is yanking a U.S.A.-themed sneaker featuring an early American flag after former NFL star-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick told the company it shouldn’t sell a shoe with a symbol that he and others consider offensive, according to people familiar with the matter.

The sneaker giant created the Air Max 1 USA in celebration of the July Fourth holiday, and it was slated to go on sale this week. The heel of the shoe featured a U.S. flag with 13 white stars in a circle, a design created during the American Revolution and commonly referred to as the Betsy Ross flag.

After shipping the shoes to retailers, Nike NKE, +1.74% asked for them to be returned without explaining why, the people said. The shoes aren’t available on Nike’s own apps and websites. “Nike has chosen not to release the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July as it featured the old version of the American flag,” a Nike spokeswoman said.

After images of the shoe were posted online, Kaepernick, a Nike endorser, reached out to company officials saying that he and others felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery, the people said. Some users on social media responded to posts about the shoe with similar concerns. Kaepernick declined to comment.American suburbs swell again as a new generation escapes the city.

Dumb!

Why do we even care what he thinks?

Since when does a single person have that much power over an executive board and the CEO, VP President etc of a corporation? WIMPS.

Dumb

The greatest flag in the history of the world and they find it offensive. That flag stands for freedom.

I will stop buying Nike products!!!

Betsy Ross was a woman. Sounds like Nike has a problem with strong women...

Here we go again, with the Nike contervies.😴 Just don't.

Betsy Ross flag is connected with revolutionary war and nothing else. This argument reflects ignorance about US history.

I find the US flag offensive because of its connection to the Tuskegee experiment and Bikini Atoll.

I scored a few pairs of these before they took 'em off the shelves. You're a 10 aren't you bfullem ?

Kaepernick7 I get the kneeling, but this is just stupid, you are gonna lose support.

Ridiculous!!

Anothe reason not to buy Nike. This is one company I wouldn’t mind Bernie Sanders targeting.

I find Kaepernick offensive.

Maybe if these people had real jobs and bills to pay they would spend less time finding things to complain about. goaway

It’s called history for a reason!!! It’s in the past!!! Just don’t repeat!! Learn!!!

Hey Nike, how long will you continue to let the tail wag the dog?

Corporations are so easily cowed by the overly sensitive nowadays. Stand your ground and grow a backbone.

I will never buy Nike again because of him. UA stock has seen growth since his BS started...

Misplaced concern in this one. That Flag represented the United States. There was no implicit representation in the flag for slavery. The confederate flag does have the connection. Kap is choosing to be offended by the wrong flag

In Progressive minds, America IS immoral by definition. Would make great Labour members under comrade jeremycorbyn

nevernike

Well think again - it was our nations flag - good bad or indifferent - we were a work in progress....deal with it.

Mmmm, what about its ties to women's history? Although there is contention about Betsy Ross's roll in the first flag, other seamstresses made early flags for the American revolution. That's what I think of when I see that flag.

VANS are the best and thats what I wear!!!

LOL everything is offensive nowadays. People are so thin skinned, and in a hurry to be offended.

Irony: SJW Kaepernick gets a company whose shoes are made in third-world nations that pay less than slave wages to drop the line because the design (in his poor addled brain) represents slavery.

Hey Kaepernick7, check out my new flag.

SirCALB Hey Market Watch- just watch the market on Nike plummet! ColinKaepernick sucks now more than ever! What a freakin' baby! TakeAStandNotAKnee BoycottNike

Just when you thought Colin Kaepernick was gone

Just lost a bunch of buyers from our family. We are boycottingNike not purchasing anything with their label

Misplaced offense - complete nonsense

Really? History needs to be learned not taught by idiots

Way to go Nike, favoring a loser! No more Nike’s for me !

Liberalism is a mental disorder. If you keep that in mind it explains a lot. Nike is being run a mediocre unemployed quarterback

Meanwhile, Nike continues to manufacture their clothes and shoes in sweatshops overseas.

Meanwhile...U.S. Flag Code

Nike is offensive

Good. It would be nice, if nicky from now on first ask kaepernick and others like him, before they make these offensive designs. They are so stupid.

Absolutely. We should tear down The Great Pyramids also. The Portuguese flag should be burned daily in Europe and the Spanish one in the Americas. Tribes such as the Igbo and Yaruba should be abolished. Their existence should be considered offensive to someone as noble as Kap.

Bunch of snowflakes

I just don’t understand. How can an American flag represent anything other than Americans? It is everyone’s flag. Stand with me and supportbetsy 🇺🇸

I’m offended by Colin Kaepernick
