Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman says that she thinks filmmaker Robert Eggers’ The Northman is his most epic film yet. In a career that has spanned nearly thirty years, Kidman has made a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The fifty-four-year-old has worked with some of cinema’s greatest filmmakers, and for years, her and now ex-husband Tom Cruise were seen as the ultimate high profile couple.
Set in Iceland in 895, The Northman tells the story of Amleth , a young prince whose father, King Aurvandill War-Raven is killed by his brother, Fjolnir . Aurvandill’s kingdom is subsequently taken by Fjolnir, resulting in the disappearance of Amleth’s mother, Queen Gudrun , and forcing the escaped Amleth to live in exile. Vowing revenge for his father’s death, Amleth’s quest is a harrowing one, filled with the sort of apocalyptic brooding that has colored Eggers’ filmography to date.
"He's committed to cinema, to putting films on the big screen that are magnificent and they're epic and this was probably the most epic." Eggers first gained recognition in 2015 with the release of the tension-inducing The Witch – a film that some were quick to label as horror but which provided audiences with much more than simple scares. The Witch was a certified hit on the festival circuit and it paved the way for Eggers’ follow up, the Oscar-nominated The Lighthouse, which starred Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe.
Whether or not Kidman will gain her second Oscar nomination in two years for her work in The Northman remains to be seen. The film does have a strong cast and offers the perfect environment for Eggers’ gloomy yet engaging filmmaking style. There’s no doubt that his films have gotten bigger with each successive release, and Kidman very well could be right when she says that this is probably Eggers’ most epic film yet.
It is an incredible film.
