It is unlikely the NFL would hold games on Saturdays if even a few college football conferences are playing. The league might also consider Friday night games.

But the other three of the sport’s elite Power Five conferences — the SEC, the ACC and the Big 12 — have expressed that they continue to plan to play in the fall, if possible.If the SEC, ACC and Big 12 switch course and end up canceling fall football, the NFL would contemplate rescheduling some games for Saturdays.

The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 exempts the NFL from antitrust laws for its broadcasting rights. It also effectively protects college and high school football by restricting the NFL’s broadcasting rights during those sports’ regular seasons. One person close to the situation said the NFL “would need a waiver for anything to happen” on rescheduling, even if college football is not playing.
