BREAKING NEWS: NFL legend Franco Harris dead at 72

FILE - Pittsburgh Steelers' Franco Harris eludes a tackle by Oakland Raiders' Jimmy Warren as he runs 42-yards for a touchdown after catching a deflected pass during an AFC Divisional NFL football playoff game in Pittsburgh, Dec. 23, 1972.

"There are many things that make it the play that it is and the most significant play in the history of our game. It’s just an honor to be in proximity to it. To know the man involved, to call Pittsburgh home, and so it's awesome to be a part of and to witness. But at the same time, we understand that we've got business, we’ve got present-day business and the best way we can honor him and that is by performing.

Harris was a first-round pick of the Steelers in the 1972 draft out of Penn State. He was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year when he rushed for 1,055 yards and 10 touchdowns. His prowess in the Steelers’ offense under legendary coach Chuck Noll quickly made him a big piece in the franchise’s dynasty.

CedergrenJodene As a Cowboy fan of course I hated him and I am sure he wouldn't have had it any other way.

One of the greatest players in NFL history! Praying for his family. 😢

RIP

That's sad news. What did he pass away from?

😢

How sad. Franco was one of the truly greats on a team of greats in the 70’s. Rest in Peace, Franco. 🥲

How has his number not been retired, bad on steelers that’s horrible

his buddy Stealer legends must get busier and show the athletes of today what integrity is No time to rest

Awesome legend

What I always remember about Franco Harris is that he used to run out of bounds a lot to avoid getting hit.

💉

I loved that he was the 'blocking back' for Heisman Trophy winner Lydell Mitchell. Harris showed everyone who had talent! Thanks for the memories Franco!!

Rest in Peace Franco. Prayers to his family. 😭

RIP, Franco

RIP to a true legend in the NFL!!
