From the fourth to the seventh round, good NFL teams draft future starters and high-quality backups. In the first three rounds, it’s easier to find impact players who can play right away. But on Day 3, many of the best players available usually struggle with consistency, have substandard physical traits or dealt with off the field issues during college.
Scouting departments have to identify the players who can overcome those issues. In the last two years, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Chiefs running Isiah Pacheco and Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua have been the best Day 3 picks. Every year, a few Pro Bowl and All-Pro players are selected in the later rounds.
The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to make the first pick on Day 3 shortly after 12 p.m. on Saturday.Rattler could be a fourth-round steal and develop into a starter eventually. He has great arm talent and was resilient throughout his college career. Teams would be smart to take a shot on him.Tampa has good height and long arms , but his physical traits weren’t good enough for him to get drafted on Day 2.
