NFL Draft 2024: Why Eagles believe drafting this ‘freaky’ player was worth the risk

The Eagles believe Houston Christian defensive lineman Jalyx Hunt was worth the risk by selecting him in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.went to his computer and began reading the mountain of scouting reports that had already been loaded into the team’s internal systems. When peering over his list,report came up, and Roseman began to read It, becoming intrigued about his size and what he could project to be in the NFL.

Initially starting his collegiate career as a safety at Cornell, Hunt bulked up and tried his hand as an edge rusher, landing at Houston Christian, formerly Houston Baptist, a school that plays on the FCS level of football. At his new position, Hunt led Houston Christian in sacks , adding 46 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, an interception, and a blocked field goal.

“This a perfect developmental guy for us because of the tools in his body, character, and work ethic,” Roseman said. “We think we can find something with him, but that’s on us and how he will work. You can say that’s the third round, and you’re a good team, so why are you doing that? These guys are hard to find. We believe in edge rushers, and we just felt like there was a tremendous buy-in from our staff about this player.

Hunt must also prove he can play up to the higher competition after playing in the FCS. In his lone FBS game last season against Western Kentucky, he finished with four tackles and two tackles for loss. The Eagles have relied on FCS players before, with tight end Dallas Goedert having gone to South Dakota State. Goedert has developed into a good tight end and has become an integral part of the Eagles offense.
