Dozens of arrests made after 120 CHP officers were tasked with helping the city and its neighbors.

Several East Bay community leaders expressed surprise Wednesday that Gov. Gavin Newsom’s highly-touted bid to crack down on crime by flooding the streets with 120 California Highway Patrol officers has already subsided after only five days.

“There doesn’t seem to be a lot of transparency around it,” Garcia-Acosta said, suggesting that more attention was needed on education, housing and reducing poverty. “If we’re not really addressing those root causes, these things are going to continue to cycle.” In an emailed statement, Newsom’s press office said that “CHP continues to have an expanded deployment in Oakland and will conduct additional surges,” adding that “efforts here are just the beginning — not the end.”

In a statement, Newsom hailed the surge, initially advertised as temporary, as “sending a clear message: Crime will not go unchecked in Oakland and East Bay neighborhoods.” He added, “I’m grateful for the men and women of the CHP who are assisting in the local-led effort to turn the tide.” The CHP still has an “expanded and visible presence” in Oakland, with 72 officers currently assigned to “the greater Oakland area,” his office said.

“Just in five days, you made 71 arrests and almost 150 cars that we can return to our citizens. That’s huge, right?” Nguyen said.Crime and Public Safety |Other organizations, such as the Oakland branch of the NAACP, said they expected the CHP to make good on its promise to continue cracking down on crime in the region. “We would welcome them back at any time that it appears as though they could be beneficial to ensuring the safety of the people here in Oakland,” said Robert L.

The arrangement has drawn concerns from privacy advocates who have expressed distrust over the CHP assuming control of the cameras.
