To be frank, I think the moral case for rent cancellation is both crystal clear and compelling. The pandemic has had a truly gutting impact on our economy, with millions upon millions of jobs vanishing since March.

Let’s break this down. So, if you aren’t being paid rent right now, well, you aren’t being paid rent. Obviously you want to rectify that situation. But even with rent deferral or forbearance programs, the majority of your tenants who can’t afford to pay nowwon’t be able to afford to pay their back rent later while also staying current with their lease. So do you evict them? Well, housing courts are starting to open back up here in the city, so maybe you think that’s an option.

That brings me back to “the other hand.” I’m asking you to imagine, for just a second, about the consequences of tossing tens upon tens of millions of people out of their homes in the middle of a pandemic, with a long, hot summer cresting into fall and winter, when other human viruses, in addition to COVID-19, surge amongst the population.

Realistically speaking, however, that intervention isn’t coming any time soon. To date, five months into this crisis, all that’s been sent out is a single round of $1200 checks, despite the House passing something far more comprehensive months ago. The administration certainly appears bored, I think would be the best word, of dealing further with the pandemic, and while trillions have been doled out to businesses for payroll protection, the very real and immediate problem remains unaddressed.
