Last week's riot at the Capitol and the GOP's Senate defeats in Georgia have weakened Trump's hold on the party, whose leaders see him as a liability.

Just a few weeks ago, President Trump, even in defeat after the November election, dominated the Republican Party — able to bend lawmakers to his will and assert a strong claim to the party’s nomination for another White House run four years from now.

Today, as the final days of his presidency hurtle toward their close and the House voted to impeach him for a second time, Trump’s formidable control of the party hasThe clearest example of Trump’s declining sway came during Wednesday afternoon’s debate as House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy , who has long been among his most loyal allies, supported censuring Trump, although not impeaching him.

“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob violence,” McCarthy said. He also dismissed the contention — pushed by Trump and widely circulated on conservative media — that leftist backers of the antifa movement were responsible for the violence. And he denounced “the continued rhetoric that Joe Biden is not the legitimate president.”“Let’s be clear: Joe Biden will be sworn in in one week because he won the election,” McCarthy said.

Events have moved so fast, and Trump’s power has waned so quickly, that the prospect of a Senate conviction of the president — albeit in a trial that would take place after he leaves office — has gone in a matter of days from almost inconceivable to openly under discussion. Conviction after he leaves office could lead to Trump being barred from running again.
