Medical students saw how people like Fauci abused their positions and politicians placed ideology ahead of the scientific method and they walked away. The federal bureaucracy surrounding medical research and public health needs an overhaul from the ground up, or be abolished.
in california I've talked to people who are more afraid of going to med school here because they don't want their licenses stripped for spreading 'misinformation.' in other words, for actual doctoring and not blind obedience to policy.
I just spoke with someone who had a friend who did pediatric ID. She had to leave the field because insurance reimbursement rates made it impossible to sustain their practice.
The real reason that applicants are declining is possibly an effect of Republicans threatening people in that field with imprisonment or even worse. Who wants to enter a field where idiots feel free to threaten you and your family. It is just not worth it.
