In a major blow to the nation’s small but vibrant screen industry, Amazon Studios announced Friday it would film the second season of its original series, inspired by the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, to Britain.
“This is a shock to everyone,” said Denise Roche, the director of Equity NZ, a union representing performers. “I really feel for all the small businesses, the tech people who invested in this for the future. Nobody had any inkling.”Amazon said the as-yet untitled series takes place on Middle-earth during the Second Age, thousands of years before the events depicted in Tolkien’s “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” books and the subsequent films directed by Peter Jackson.
Nash said Friday the government had found out only a day earlier that Amazon was leaving and he was disappointed by the decision. He said the government was withdrawing the offer of the extra 5%.

nickgbperry I bet the Kiwis who don't work in the film industry are glad for this.
nickgbperry Britain paid better.

nickgbperry Move it back no one cares about Britain. It's not magical like new Zealand
nickgbperry That's a pretty stupid move. As much as England is so beautiful, New Zealand is Middle Earth. We hates Amazon.
nickgbperry AWESOME! I am not British, but I've been there often, It has REALLY pissed me off that Tolkien's homeland and people, have totally been overlooked to represent his work. Peter Jackson displayed the worst kind of Nepotism by awarding the work to his country. Just my opinion...
nickgbperry The government and the leader ship of New Zealand is always doing what’s best for their country. They are a model for others to follow. If more countries were like New Zealand we would eliminate half our problems in a week.
nickgbperry Amazon is on a villainous path! The are capturing all markets with money.
nickgbperry Turns out imposing zero-covid insanity isn't a great idea after all. They went 'all-in' on a magic vaccine, and rolled snake eyes. Pride. Vanity. Insanity.

triketora nickgbperry No big loss. We still have around 30 productions shooting here that now have access to the best crews and facilities.
nickgbperry queue news story about Amazon Studios delaying completion of the next Lord of the Rings season due to Covid outbreak in Britain
nickgbperry Perhaps they loved New Zealand but Aotearoa and labour give them the shits
nickgbperry President Biden and the administration must not only mandate vaccines but must also implant microchips in every American, this will secure our country in being safe and prosperous. Without your wisdom and direction the USA would be in peril! Our Southern border crisis has ended.
nickgbperry Because people in Britain mostly look like Orks without makeup. Especially the women. Much cheaper extras
nickgbperry Mostly moving computers
nickgbperry Didn't New Zealand JUST lockdown until January 2022, until further notice? Seems that would put a dent in future filming from an American company with employees traveling from all over the world. Film it in Scotland and the mountains, and it'll be fine.
nickgbperry
nickgbperry nice
nickgbperry as it turns out in the age of covid when you don't know if you'll be able to travel into and out of a country freely, that does tend to have a chilling effect on what sort of talent you can get to act in your production
nickgbperry This, doesn't bode well for the quality of the 1st season.. I'm not all that concerned there will even be a 2nd.
