Since early in the pandemic, New Zealand had pursued an unusual zero-tolerance approach to the virus through strict lockdowns and aggressive contact tracing. But that all changed when the more contagious delta variant somehow escaped from a quarantine facility in August after it was brought into the country from a traveler returning from Australia.Despite New Zealand going into the strictest form of lockdown after just a single local case was detected, it ultimately wasn’t enough to crush the outbreak entirely.
Ardern said that seven weeks of lockdown restrictions in Auckland had helped keep the outbreak under control. About 65% of New Zealanders have had at least one dose and 40% are fully vaccinated. Among people age 12 and older, about 79% have had at least a single jab.
Well it was silly 100% in New Zealand to think zero-tolerance. I got it while travel there in February of 2020. Oh and by the way, so did my whole family. It was like a flu with a really bad headache. We are all fine, have been with our natural immunity since we got it naturally.
What a ridiculous framing. They protected their people until vaccines became available and saved countless lives in the process. They did it right. You know how we know? So few deaths.

No matter if 100% of people are vaccinated, coronavirus still won't disappear. The fact that millions of people still think if you get vaccinated it means you'll never get covid, is troubling. US media needs to stop spreading this lie to support vaccine mandates.

Last year we did not have vaccines or Delta, This year we did not get on top of things. Last year we started lockdown with 102 cases but eventually got to days of zero new cases and eventually days of no active cases. This year we started lockdown AFTER 1 case.

I see that as a success though. Thousands of lives have been saved in New Zealand as Ardern's government protected residents while an effective vaccine regime was developed elsewhere...and now maybe even an effective treatment will be available as NZ tacks to different approach.

NZ acknowledged that long ago too. Zero covid was never a long term goal - it was simply a short term goal to avoid a high death toll until vaccines existed.

This is intensely misleading. Almost 80% of New Zealanders over 12 have been vaccinated and they’ve had less than 50 deaths. They’ve done WAY better than almost any other country.

NZ has has 27 covid deaths shot far in a population of 5 million. If the US had the same death rate, we should have had 1800 deaths, not 700,000.
