Believe it or not, New York fans have reasons to be cautiously optimistic that the Knicks will be able to rejuvenate the franchise this summer by reeling in a couple of the biggest fish in free agency.

Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors during Game 5 of a playoff series against the Los Angeles Clippers on April 24. While New York fans are cautiously optimistic the Knicks will be able to rejuvenate the franchise this summer by reeling in a couple of the biggest fish in free agency, they are often reminded of reasons to be pessimistic.

In the long, dreary years that have followed, there was only limited, sporadic success for Knicks fans to get excited about. The current vibe in New York is far different from that disappointing and inefficacious offseason nine years ago. There is a renewed sense of hope and enthusiasm that has been missing for quite some time.

As a result, the Knicks are the only team in the league with enough cap space to present Durant with a max offer , as well as the opportunity to hand-pick a free agent running mate of his choice. A couple of other teams could conceivably get to north of $70 million in space, but they would have to move a major piece and quickly find a willing trade partner to make it happen. For instance, the Clippers would need to trade away Danilo Gallinari to open up a second max slot.

It is also notable that Mills, Perry and Fizdale are the first trio of African-Americans to ever serve as an NBA team's president, G.M. and head coach all at the same time. Not limited to just those three positions, New York's executive management and basketball operations staff also feature a bevy of similarly qualified African-Americans, such as Allan Houston, Gerald Madkins and Craig Robinson.
