Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) announced most capacity restrictions will lift on restaurants, bars and live performances.

the reopening on the state’s positivity rate of 1.79%, the lowest positivity rate in New York since Nov. 5 and a 50% drop in the last month.

Broadway theaters will be allowed to reopen on May 19, however it’s unlikely shows will be up and running before September because of how long productions will need to ramp up, according toCuomo said New York will keep its 6-foot social distancing requirement in place, but would update the mandate as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updates its guidance.

According to Cuomo, the state will have “everything back to normal” within the next two months if the positivity rate stays low and the vaccination rate continues to increase. Cuomo also announced New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority will resume 24-hour subway service on May 17.because “if you shut down the subway, you shut down a part of our city,” while MTA chief Patrick Foye has lobbied Cuomo to restore service for months. New York has had mandated capacity restrictions since March 2020 when the state emerged as a Covid-19 hotspot in the U.S.
