Two New York lawyers pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to a charge related to their participation in a Molotov cocktail attack on an empty police car last year, resolving a case that grew out of violence during demonstrations over George Floyd’s murder in police custody.
Ms. Rahman, a human-rights lawyer, and Mr. Mattis, a one-time associate at Pryor Cashman LLP, both said in court that they deeply regretted their actions.According to federal prosecutors, Ms. Rahman, 32, threw a chemical-filled glass bottle into an unoccupied police vehicle during a late-May 2020 protest in Brooklyn. As the mixture lit the car console aflame, Ms. Rahman fled the scene in a tan minivan driven by Mr. Mattis, whom prosecutors called the getaway driver.
Pursuing such charges with federal law is unusual, but then-Attorney General William Barr urged the nation’s federal prosecutors to be aggressive when charging violent demonstrators with crimes.
