New York Just Became the First City to Directly Fund Abortions

of abortion funds in the U.S. that provides vital resources for people who want or need abortion services, but faces structural barriers to access. Whilein 1973, abortion has never been easily available to many patients.

While these myriad barriers exist, abortion funds including the NYAAF play a critical role in helping people get abortions. Republicans and the Trump administration will continue to strip dwindling abortion rights, but the campaign in New York City demonstrates how advocates can hold their elected officials accountable and protect abortion access.

“When New Yorkers heard the news on the abortion bans across the country, many of us felt helpless,” councilwoman Carlina Rivera, co-chair of the Council’s Women’s Caucus said in an emailed statement to. “We wanted to do more, and by making New York City the first in the nation to directly fund abortion, we are finally putting our money where our mouth is.”

The councilwoman also made reference to New York’s history of abortion rights: Before the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade, New York was one of only a few states that legally permitted abortions. New York City became somewhat of a haven for monied patients who needed abortions pre-This time around, NYC is making more of an effort to make sure people with low incomes have access. “It's time for our city to be that beacon for the country once again,” Rivera said.

Oberdorf says she hopes that other municipalities will use the #FundAbortionNYC movement as a road map in their own cities and states. Based on the success NYAAF and their advocates just achieved in NYC, Oberdorf explains that “Others can look to local abortion funds to guide the way and identify ways to fund abortion in their own cities.”
