New York City will move a step closer to determining the winner of the Democratic mayoral primary on Tuesday by redistributing votes to some candidates and eliminating others through its new ranked-choice voting process.Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams in the lead with more than 31% of the nearly 800,000 votes counted, according to the city’s Board of Elections.
The mayoral primary was the first time ranked-choice voting was used in a citywide race in New York. The system allowed voters to list up to five of the 13 candidates on the ballot in preferential order. The ranked-choice process kicked in because no candidate won a majority of first-place votes. The board will go through the ranked-choice elimination rounds again with those absentee ballots for the final result. An official winner in the race for mayor won’t be declared until the week of July 12, according to the board.Mary Altaffer/Associated Press
The campaigns for Mr. Adams, Ms. Wiley and Ms. Garcia said Monday they were awaiting Tuesday’s results for a better picture of their standings.
