NEW YORK - The New York City Council voted on Thursday to close the city’s infamous Rikers Island jail complex by 2026, casting off a detention system plagued by chronic violence and decrepit facilities, as the nation rethinks mass incarceration.
“Rikers Island is a symbol of brutality and inhumanity and it is time for us to once and for all close Rikers Island,” City Council Speaker Corey Johnson told colleagues before the vote. Two decades ago, when the city’s crime rates were at their peak, Rikers’ population numbered more than 20,000 inmates.
A New York state Commission of Correction report in 2018 called for expediting the closure, citing a “spiraling year to year increase of violent incidents and degrading conditions facing both inmates and staff.”

QueenofCr8tvty Keep it ready to house the TrumpCrimeSyndicate
Don't do that!! It would be a perfect place for 45 and his cronies to take up residence. When this is all said and done, there will be a lot of new inmates. Rudy might like it there, he probably knows a bunch of people.
My favorite part of article 'replace the prison with four humane facilities throughout the city'
This is just plain stupid. Coming under the administration of Mayor Bill 'Totally Useless' DeBlasio. Visitors will now hang out in boroughs before going into the jail to see their 'relatives' and becoming familiar with the neighborhood where the new jails will be built. Bad Idea!
Now where are the bad guys from SVU going to go?

I have a better idea, make it the new GOP headquarters.
And then?
Shame it will be closed before the Dotard has a chance to enjoy it
There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Riker’s will be closed anytime soon.
Let them all out. Enjoy that ny
What a mistake
BarrieNJ The MCC is about to get a lot more crowded.
This shouldn't be a problem. What could possibly go wrong? WTF, Im so out of here. Bye, NY.
Please keep one very dark, dank rat infested cell available for Trump.
Yes they are moving jail to Penn station which already doubles as a homeless shelter
closing this isn't going to magically make all the rights violations disappear, thats the problem, correct the staff violating the rights rather than act like the walls did it.
Epstein might have had a better chance there for a court appearance
Very infamous. Oh, the stories that can be told...
Follower right now that I cannot delete is a Twitter administration troll, who oversees twitters administration abuse, and who do I sue for gross negligence? Looking for legal representation familiar with internet laws!
