New York City businesses will fully reopen starting July 1, marking an end to many Covid-19 lockdown measures that have restricted their operations for more than a year, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Thursday.
Restaurants, stores, movie theaters, event venues and other businesses will be allowed to operate at full capacity by that date, the Democratic mayor said in an interview on MSNBC, crediting the city’s vaccination efforts as the reason for the removal of restrictions. “We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full strength,” he said. “What we’re seeing is people have gotten vaccinated in extraordinary numbers.”
Later on Thursday, the mayor said he hadn’t discussed the city’s reopening plan with Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has set and overseen most Covid-19 restrictions in the state. Mr. de Blasio said he made the decision about the July 1 date after consulting city health officials. “It’s quite clear it’s time to set a goal and move on that goal,” he said at a press conference. “So, we’ll work with all the other levels of government, but we’ve got to keep moving toward a goal at this point.”

I fear this story won’t end well. Covid is highly airborne indoors. NYC has made zero attempt to mitigate aerosol transmission. MTA buses still have windows closed; NYC stores still aren’t propping their doors. “Outdoor dining” even evolved into fully enclosed indoor spaces.
Covid can get you on June 30th, but not July 1st. Because, science.
