“This discovery shows us how much more there is to learn even in our own backyards,” lead author R. Alexander Pyron said in a news release.

But Pyron and co-authors Kyle O’Connell, Jennifer Lamb and David Beamer sequenced the DNA of the Pascagoula dusky salamander to prove that it is genetically distinct from those similar species. Their results were published May 3 in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Zootaxa.

“Many of these dusky salamanders are cryptic, meaning they can’t easily be told apart with the naked eye, which is one reason they went undiscovered for so long,” Pyron said. “Only with genome sequencing can we see how different they really are.” There are approximately 750 species of salamander known to science, with about a third of which are found in North America. Many of those are found in the rivers, streams and swamps of the Southeast.
