“Our approach is like deploying tiny guards to protect blood vessels from going bad, so that there is no need to open the body over and over again to repair them,” said Lian-Wang Guo of the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery and the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center.
What sets this method apart is its precision, which allows for targeted, long-term medication administration to specific regions. “To make sure this technology will be safe and effective for patients, we have a lot more work to do,” Guo said., over 400,000 vascular reconstructions are performed each year in the United States, and the number of dialysis patients has also shown an uptick.
