The largest wildfire burning in the United States is heading toward mountain resort towns in northern New Mexico.

Fire officials say the fire is racing up steep slopes and along exposed ridge lines while tossing embers high into the air. Crews braced Wednesday for another day of strong winds that will fan the flames.

The blaze has charred more than 370 square miles and has destroyed homes throughout the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which span northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham says there have been no reports of widespread damage to homes despite consecutive days of howling winds pushing the massive blaze across the tinder-dry landscape.

Some residents who were allowed to return home after weeks of being evacuated found their homes spared, others weren't as lucky. Two more days of high winds are expected before relief Friday.

More New Mexico Residents Warned They May Need to Flee FireFirefighters in New Mexico’s Rocky Mountain foothills are preparing to excavate new firebreaks and clear brush that can serve as tinder to create more defensive lines. They’re trying to prevent a massive wildfire from destroying more homes and pine forests. The fire that is largest in the U.S. has burned close to 300 structures, including homes, commercial buildings and barns. It jumped a highway late Sunday. That allowed it to take hold in rugged areas difficult for firefighters to reach. That prompted a warning for more residents of rural villages to be prepared to flee quickly. Another New Mexico wildfire in the mountains near a key nuclear research facility prompted preparations for evacuations.
