New Jersey beach sand collapse leaves teen dead, 17-year-old sister injured

TOMS RIVER, New Jersey -- Police in Toms River, New Jersey say an 18-year-old has died after he became trapped in the sand while digging a large hole on the beach.

According to police, crews were dispatched at about 4:09 p.m. to the beach entrance near Seaview Road on the barrier island. Police said 18-year-old Levi Caverly, of Maine, and his 17-year-old sister were digging a large hole when it collapsed and trapped them.Caverley did not survive the collapse, police said. Crews were still working to recover his body.

Emergency crews from neighboring towns also responded to the scene to assist in rescue efforts, police said.

Omg this is crazy and tragic. They were probably just doing what they always did as kids having fun (but much smaller holes before), but not realizing they were digging their own graves this time. I can’t imagine how the sister must be feeling. RIP.

Lessons learned, don't dig holes in the sand unless you're planning on digging your own grave😧

Very sad but this is why shoring is important in construction. That had to be a deep hole, and sand is soft. Really unfortunate.

Sad, stupid death... the lifeguards at my Orange County, CA beach have, in recent years refused to tell people to stop digging ... it's a huge PublicSafety issue. I remember, when they used to hand people shovels and tell them to refill them! beachlife

Why dig a hole so close to water where is parenting supervision or someone in their ear to tell them that’s not safe. Easily could of been preventable rest peace young one.
