Spot electricity prices averaged around $200 per megawatt-hour at 4 p.m. in New England on the afternoon of Jan. 18, or nearly four times the average price of wholesale power in most Mid-Atlantic states. About 37% of power came from natural gas, 26% was from nuclear, 17% from burning oil, and 20% from renewables and hydro, according to New England ISO, the non-profit that runs the grid.
