Snow clings to the trees along a walking path at Como Lake in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday, March 22, 2024. – It may officially be spring, but New England was battling a wintry weather combination across the region Saturday with more than a foot of snow expected in ski country, and rain, wind and possible flooding in southern areas and along the coast.
“There's a pretty steep cutoff with lower amounts near the coast and higher amounts in the mountains,” Casey said. “Overnight dry weather will give way to sunshine,” said Frank Nocera, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts. Despite the sun, Sunday was expected to be blustery with temperatures chillier than average for late March, he said.At Loon Mountain in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, skiers were looking forward to the 12 to 20 inches of new snow the storm was expected to drop on top of a foot earlier this week.
“Very dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Natural and human-triggered avalanches large enough to bury people are very likely,” the center said. “Some avalanches will be large enough to snap trees or destroy a house and may run far into areas previously considered safe.”There was a threat of flooding across the region including in far southern New Hampshire, according to the weather service.
In the West, a winter storm warning was in effect until Sunday morning for parts of the Sierra Nevada, where up to 4 feet of snow and winds gusting in excess of 80 mph were possible on the highest mountain peaks, the weather service said.
