State lawmakers are considering a plan that might save you money on child care. It's in a bill that would create a child care credit program. The lawmakers backing it say it would save families money by splitting child-care costs equally, three ways between a worker, his or her employer and the state.
Workers would need to live in Ohio and must be picked by their employers. Also, companies would need to be in Ohio and have more than one employee participating. Finally, workers and their employers would both need to submit applications. "Current state support for childcare is inadequate, leaving many families who don't qualify for publicly-funded programs like Title 20 struggling to afford childcare," said Ohio Sen. Michele Reynolds, a Republican from the 3rd District. The bill would set up a one-time, $10 million fund to pay for this, which would given out on a first-come, first serve basis.Future funding would depend on the program’s success and legislative action.
The lawmakers who wrote the bill say beyond helping families, it would help child-care providers address low reimbursement in current programs, and would help companies attract or retain workers.ABC 6 will keep an eye on the bill as it moves through the Statehouse.
