, Digitimes states that Apple’s new smartphone range will be up to 20% more power-efficient than the iPhone 12 models - a massive upgrade. And the site also reveals the primary reason for that power saving: next-generation displays.
Digitimes states Apple partners Samsung Display and LG Display are currently converting their iPhone production lines from LTPS OLED, used in the iPhone 12 range, to LTPO OLED. This “completed in the first half of 2021” explains Digitimes’ source. And this is a double win for iPhone fans. First, iPhone 12 models actually have worse battery life than their predecessors after Apple equipped themthan the iPhone 11 range. Second, LTPO enables a variable refresh rate of between 1Hz and 120Hz so iPhone users are finally going to enjoy the high refresh rates that have proved popular on Android devices for the last few years - but without the excessive battery drain it had caused.
