The Tonale, like the Stelvio, is named after a famous Italian mountain pass, albeit a lower one than that of its bigger SUV sibling.
The Tonale sets a benchmark for the segment for driving dynamics, Alfa has claimed. It uses MacPherson suspension with frequency-selective damping, achieves 50:50 weight distribution and adopts a brake-by-wire system that promises “instantaneous response”, while the steering is said to be the most direct in the segment. For now, the core Tonale range is made up of two electrified variants: a mild-hybrid powertrain with a choice of 128bhp or 158bhp and a plug-in hybrid.
The Tonale has all of the technology you would expect in a premium SUV: a digital 12.3in screen, plus a 10.25in touchscreen with a customisable home screen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, over-the-air updates and a host of driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and traffic-jam assistance.
Is it really a bold new era or is it just more of the same but smaller and that hasn’t really worked out for them?
I know there’s a very “all modern cars look the same” vibe to this but that looks like a styling exercise for the F-Pace facelift… Where is the brand design language?
Who needs an SUV anyhow to block parking spaces & travel around with 1 person in All started with American 'look at me' pick ups! Quite happy with my classic hot hatch!👍
Toenail?😲
I remember being sent by Editor Walker at Motor to interview the new boss of Alfa Romeo in 1986 to hear plans for the next “bold new era”…I was hooked, joined Alfa, and announced another “new era” during 4 years as PR manager. 36 years on I’ve sadly lost count of new eras.
I know 'this is what the market wants', but is it? I can't remember the last time I saw a Stelvio on the road. I want a Giulia QF estate that can tow, but the market for those is apparently me and three blokes on PistonHeads.
Anything that keeps Alfa alive is good for me.
Looks exactly the same as every other SUV on the road. Alfa used to stand for style, individuality, something different. This is not any of those.
They're not worthy of the Alfa Romeo badge.
I like it and would be happy to see Alfa Romeo have some success again. But would have been nice if this car came 2-3 years ago.
Another bold new era that’ll be..
Looks great. I’m a fan of the design. I just hope they’ve sorted the infotainment out…if they have, they might be onto a winner.
I'm seeing a FPace on frame 2, or it's my eyes 😂
