Netflix has been willing to turn a blind eye toward password sharing when it was growing subscribers, but losing customers can change behavior quickly.

"In terms of [password sharing], no plans on making any changes there,"."Password sharing is something you have to learn to live with, because there's so much legitimate password sharing, like you sharing with your spouse, with your kids .... so there's no bright line, and we're doing fine as is."

Netflix has built a consumer friendly brand over the years, and allowing password sharing has helped with that image. "Sharing likely helped fuel our growth by getting more people using and enjoying Netflix," the company said in its shareholder note."And we've always tried to make sharing within a member's household easy, with features like profiles and multiple streams."Earlier this year, Netflix began

If Netflix follows the model it laid out in those countries, Netflix will charge extra to accounts that share passwords out of home. Netflix didn't outline a global strategy yet but suggested global changes will come"in the short-to-mid term."Disclosure: Comcast is the parent company of CNBC and NBCUniversal.

CNBC They are already tanking. This move will cost them customers on top of those who have dropped them or are now planning to do so.

CNBC netflix if this ends up with me being unable to use my Netflix account on multiple devices I own, I'll cancel without a 2nd thought. Subscriber count is down because you've lost so much good content to other streaming services, but continue raising prices. Less value for more $

CNBC So what about parents paying for their college kids Netflix? What about people who travel a lot how is it going to track it by device limit? If so what about people who have 50 devices in their house. I don’t see a way they can even do this if they wanted to

CNBC I don't not expect it...your mad....um is this your first time doin a solid........live and move on

CNBC I guess piracy is coming back this season. Someone boot up Limewire

CNBC Maybe if netflix would stop raising their prices every few months.. there are tons of streaming options out there these days. Too many options to keep paying more and more for theirs.

CNBC Am I the only one bored by paying Netflix a monthly sim for average stuff now. Time to terminate it and use the money for family days.

CNBC Go ahead netflix see what happens when you do this Crackdown. You think your stocks are going down now they're going to plummet after this.

CNBC I understand this if it’s outside of family (and/or it is more that the 4-5 profiles it let’s you set up - how?), but family should be allowed to share. People do this because streaming is otherwise too decentralized and expensive. If done, they’ll lose subscribers for sure.

CNBC Going to be interesting watching “Now Netflix Folded” documentaries on Hulu Whatever the correct response to massive password sharing is, this is definitely the WRONG one

CNBC So my parents can't use my account? What's the point of having multiple profiles

CNBC So each person has no right to let someone else watch on his Netflix? Foh

CNBC Canceled my netflix and not going back. They can enjoy thier subscriber loss by themselves.

CNBC And will lose half of their subscribers if they do!

CNBC 😝😝😝😝busted

CNBC I was going to cancel Netflix but I'm waiting for Cuties 2 to come out.

CNBC Lmaaaooo they think we care

CNBC Chill the f out. You already have this under control, by only allowing users to watch Netflix on a certain number of devices at once and only allowing a certain number of downloads. This isn’t something that needs more controlling or fixing.

CNBC Lol time to sell your stock lmao.

CNBC Don’t get greedy or u will go bankrupt

CNBC Well NetflixUK / netflix can swivel. You really think with the amount of competition these days you are in any position ? Keep counting the numbers of subscribers leaving, it’s gonna be a full time job for a few people

CNBC A VPN and 8tb hard drives.

CNBC I mean they keep hiking up the prices, keep taking off good content and release mid content. Idk why they're suprised

CNBC netflix keep raising your price and you’ll lose more

CNBC If they do that they'll be killing themselves faster than they're already dying. Most people have switched to Hulu and or Disney now

CNBC Not cool

CNBC If I have to watch Ads.... I'm totally OUT!

CNBC They’ll lose more subscribers. It’s already limited to one active stream per account.

CNBC Canceling Netflix if this BS starts!!! Their corporate greed is BS!! They USED TO have good shows, but I RARELY touch my acct anymore. I pay the max fee (that they've raised SEVERAL times) ONLY for my kids!! I'll GLADLY cancel my sub! NetflixAndBill NetflixNeedsToChill

CNBC Crackdown smack down, millions will also will say buhbye!

CNBC They’ve known about, and condoned sharing of accounts forever. This is their reaction to the earlier news of losing 200,000 customers, in turn shares plummeting, in the last quarter.

CNBC Lol Netflix is crazy if they think I'll give them money if they kick me off my parents account. Good luck!

CNBC Hence why you have losing numbers.

CNBC It's all reality T.V. and poorly produced shows for stay at home moms. The service died 5 years ago.

CNBC Can't believe Netflix just killed itself

CNBC Next thing you know Pornhub will crack down on it's sharing buttons. It'll be a dark day when I can't let my followers and *STEP(?) sister know what porn video I watched that night.

CNBC Could it be that maybe they just don't got many interesting things to watch?

CNBC If they do that, people will get back into the mighty torrent again

CNBC If you're losing subs, it's because of ongoing recessions and price hikes on your part, tacked on to a product with decreased quality. If I pay the stupid money for 4 accounts, I have a right to share my damn password with 4 people. Easy unsub if this goes through.

CNBC Netflix should have focused on older content that can't be found anywhere else. They should have bought MGM when they had the chance. And now, they should try to buy it smaller streaming services.

CNBC netflix Already increased prices on using multiple devices. They're going to lose millions of subscribers. They're not going to make more money from this.

CNBC I couldn’t care less about a corporation trying to gouge out every penny they can to appease shareholders. Y’all wanna freak out over family members using Netflix well use a different app and cancel Netflix all together. Y’all ain’t special anymore

CNBC Listen, I pay for my account every single month. I will share my password with whoever I damn well please.

CNBC I’m assuming that they will use the public IP addresses to figure out which profile is the actual house hold who pays but how will they know which IP address to block?

CNBC I mean, I barely use Netflix now, I primarily used it for the Marvel shows and they’re not there anymore sooooo 🤷🏻‍♂️

CNBC Remember when Netflix was $7 a month and it was fun to watch. Now it’s super expensive and all the content isn’t great. There are other platforms out there Netflix, you’re not the only one in the game.

CNBC Then it’ll be bye bye Netflix

jimbcbs4 CNBC So mind your business

CNBC Impossible to monitor, you can't tell subscribers where they can or can't log into their account.

tbell1968 CNBC Wait. What? 🤔. I need to get Netflix and SHARE my Password to EVERYONE

CNBC hey if you don't watch it but paying for it what's wrong with a family member watching...no one has my password but I forget I have it

CNBC netflix you will see mass cancellations

CNBC I’m just waiting for Ozark and Stranger Things to finish and I plan on canceling because of another price hike

CNBC Hmmm Hulu hbo max Disney and peacock way better

CNBC 🔥 FireStick 🔥

Netflix Needs to Handle Its Freeloaders DelicatelyA crackdown on password sharing could boost revenue as subscriber growth slows, but alienating viewers could be costly too. Netflix needs a 'Not interested in this' option. Then once clicked, we should never have to scroll past that particular movie again. Ever. It's not like they have GREAT content or like they respect the subscriber by not launching infinite seasons 1 of shows that never go on. Now this. They'll lose some potential subscribers. They could even do this, but at a time they had great content to lure us into paying 4 it. Maybe they could add a sharing fee like restaurants do.
