The U.S. Navy announced it will begin testing a new clutch design on the V-22 Osprey aircraft after a series of fatal crashes involving the aircraft over the past two years.Vice Adm. Carl Chebi, the head of the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, made the announcement at a House oversight hearing about the crashes on Wednesday. The command is in charge of the entire military's fleet of over 400 aircraft.
The legal action targets the maker of the aircraft, Bell Textron and Boeing, and the maker of its engine, Rolls-Royce.The federal lawsuit alleges that two systems failed on the aircraft, which could have contributed to the June 8, 2022 crash that killed Capt. John J. Sax, Capt. Nicholas P. Losapio, Cpl. Nathan E. Carlson, Cpl. Seth D. Rasmuson and Lance Cpl. Evan A. Strickland. All three companies previously told Newsweek they could not comment on pending litigation.
