Abigayle Rasmussen, an archeologist and assistant at Elgin Public Museum, looks at a Native American exhibit that contains objects that must be evaluated and possibly returned to the ancestors of the Native American tribes from where they came under new federal regulations.
It’s a monumental task for a museum with more than 1,000 objects that need to be reviewed, Blazier said. “Obviously, anything used in a sacred ceremony should not be in our hands without specific permission. we have so little information about where so many of our things came from.” Some had to be transported to the Illinois State Museum in Springfield for DNA tests, she said. They don’t know when they might get an answer because the backlog there is enormous.
