All the Oakland A’s can hope to do after they suffered one of their more gut-wrenching losses of the season Thursday is to try and learn from the painful experience.Ruiz, looking for his first career Major League save, gave up four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning — including a three-run homer to Joey Meneses — in a 7-5 A’s loss to the Washington Nationals.
“The bullpen has been leaned on a little bit and for Norge there, that opportunity with a two-run lead, a little bit of a cushion,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “The biggest thing is walking prior to the home run. In that last a-bat, got ahead 0-2 and just we couldn’t put him away.” That set up Langeliers, who entered Thursday in an 0-for-15 slump. But on a 2-1 count, he doubled to score both Sheldon Neuse and Machín.“Good at-bats. He’s learning this league,” Kotsay said of Langeliers, adding that opposing pitchers are “learning him, they’re making adjustments, and it was good to see him make that adjustment in that last at-bat and take the ball the other way off the wall.
Through the first three innings, Waldichuk was able to minimize the damage after falling into some early trouble, as he stranded six runners in the first three innings.
