David Reich, NRSF PR director, says teen fatalities spike by about 20% during these summer months, adding that we lose about seven teens on our roads and highways around the country every day.

) - We’re in the midst of what’s known as the 100 Deadliest Days : the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day. These few months tend to see a dangerous spike in teen traffic fatalities.

The National Road Safety Foundation is warning parents to teach their teen drivers about safety while out on the road this summer. He says while 30% of all traffic deaths are caused by distractions, that number rises to 60% when it comes to teens. Reich says this is why parents need to be extra careful with teaching their young drivers the rules of the road. This includes keeping your eyes on the road and away from distractions.

“Distraction is not just cell phones,” Reich said. “It’s not just fiddling with the GPS or having a drink or eating while you’re driving. A big distraction for young people especially is other passengers, other young people in the car. That’s why many states have graduated driver licensing laws that prohibit new drivers from driving with other teens.
