It became apparent to many Jacksonville residents this past weekend their city is under attack, yet in the face of this threat the most conspicuous silence of all has been that of Jacksonville's acting sheriff, Pat Ivey.

That message referred to Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, who posted hate speech attacking Jews on social media earlier in the week. More hate messages included banners hoisted on an I-10 overpass on the Westside and on the Arlington Expressway, as well as a message projected on the outside of a downtown building.— although often in pro forma statements that said little and came too late, hardly profiles in courage or leadership. But they at least came, one way or another.

Neither Ivey nor his department even met that unimpressive minimum standard until mid-day Monday. JSO has had little to say about the Nazis running around town, made no assurances that people should feel safe, no attestation it takes such hateful rhetoric seriously. And throughout the weekend stories across local media included a familiar refrain:"JSO did not respond to questions.

"We will continue to monitor any reports of this nature to determine if they rise to level of a criminal nature." Those statements were inartful: Antisemitic displays are threatening by their very nature, even if that implied threat isn't necessarily a crime. There was a way to have acknowledged that; instead, JSO deployed only a clinical pass. No one is expecting vigilante justice, but the sheriff plays a bigger community role beyond simply throwing people in the poke. And the display during the Georgia-Florida game came on JSO's watch.

Who you covering up for Nate?

Complete silence is condoning the anti-Semitism. Unfortunate.

This is a fake crisis. Completely manufactured. Please don’t fall for it.
