Natalie Portman says ‘Léon: The Professional’ “definitely has some cringey aspects to it.”

“It’s a movie that’s still beloved, and people come up to me about it more than almost anything I’ve ever made, and it gave me my career,” Portman says in a wide-ranging new interview with“But it is definitely, when you watch it now, it definitely has some cringey, to say the least, aspects to it. So, yes, it’s complicated for me.”

The movie, which she filmed at age 12, stars Portman as an embattled adolescent who partners with the much older, titular hitman after her family is murdered. At various points throughout the film, Portman’s Mathilda professes her love for Léon and in one scene sings both “Like a Virgin” and a Marilyn Monroe-esque “Happy Birthday ” to him.
