Artemis I is scheduled to launch on Aug. 29. The mission, which will send an unmanned capsule in orbit around the moon, is the first launch in NASA’s mission to get man to Mars by the 2030s.

A participant tries out a lunar rover simulator to help familiarize one with the landscape and lighting on a different side of the moon at Johnson Space Center in preparation for Artemis 1 on Friday, Aug. 5, 2022 in Houston.NASA is about to take its biggest step back toward the moon in 50 years.

“From our standpoint, Artemis is just a continuation of what we started years ago and now in our professional career and in our lifetime have the opportunity to pick up and continue,” Ridings said. But to get there, NASA has to make sure that its new vehicles can handle the rigors of real space flight.

It’s to lead to Artemis II, where humans will replace mannequins, and Artemis III, which will land on the moon. NASA programmers have developed virtual reality simulations that show astronauts the light conditions on the south pole of the moon, where Artemis missions are planned. The low angle of the sun at the southern pole casts opaque shadows into dark craters, which could be treacherous for astronauts trying to navigate the surface.
