Unfortunately, the writers also had a handful of plot-heavy storylines to conclude within the 42 minutes of the series finale. But they still utilized every minute to pay tribute to the mystery drama show's fans.
At the beginning of the episode, Bess learned that Tristan, as the Sin Eater, could perform a "soul supernova," which would wipe out an infinite number of sins. The only problem was that Tristan's soul was tied to Nancy's via their past lives, which would prohibit him from performing the soul supernova. So the two of them entered a shared memory weave to break their connection, and Ace went along for the ride as a third party to pull them out.
Nashua killed August with Lucia's scissors, and the act tied their souls. So Nancy and Tristan's connection was far from romantic, and the revelation seemingly put an end to the possibility of a concrete romance forming between them. Plus, Tristan could tell that Nancy would always love Ace more than she could ever love him, so they parted ways after saving the town. Since Tristan was free from his curse as the Sin Eater, he decided to leave Horseshoe Bay and sail around the world.
