Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone waves to the crowd after winning the women's 400 meters during the U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Ore., July 8, 2023. Olympic champion McLaughlin-Levrone won her first 400-meter hurdles race in nearly two years Friday, May 31, 2024. Incredible. Incomparable. Brilliant. The analysts on NBC seemed to run out of superlatives to describe Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone during the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Sunday night.
This time, in Paris, she’ll be gunning for history. While she has a worthy rival in Dutch star Femke Bol, she’ll arrive on the purple-colored track at Stade de France in early August with heavy expectations and the potential to leave with multiple medals. While she only ran in the 400 hurdles in Eugene, Oregon, she could participate on two relay teams. The former Florence High star won his fourth national title in the javelin at the trials with a season-best 272-5 on his first throw.
The biggest news out of the trials, however, might have been the New Jersey native who failed to qualify. Two-time gold medaliststumbled during the final of the 800 meters, her signature event. She is hoping to be chosen for the 4x400-meter relay pool, but most track observers believe that is unlikely.
