A 58-year-old Nutley High School substitute teacher was arrested Tuesday and faces charges for alleged “inappropriate behavior” while teaching, police said.
Richard Dunn was charged with four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor and one count of lewdness, Nutley Police Director Alphonse Petracco and Chief Thomas Strumolo said in a joint statement. Those charges stemmed from an alleged incident during class on Friday. Authorities also charged Dunn with endangering the welfare of a minor for an alleged incident while substituting in another class Feb. 1, according to the statement. Police did not provide details on the allegations against Dunn, who is a township resident.
In the statement, Petracco said “protecting the children, and the residents of this community is our number one concern. When police are called upon to investigate allegations as serious as the ones reported last week, we prioritize our efforts to ensure no one is at risk.” “The Nutley Public School District takes these matters very seriously and we are currently working with the local authorities. Due to the investigation, we are unable to comment further,” the school district said in a statement last week.It was unclear if Dunn had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
