N.J. sanctuary helps seniors keep their dogs

Almost 12 years ago, Diane Nitto of Manalapan selected a caramel-colored mixed breed pup from a group of adoptable dogs at PetSmart in Freehold.Nitto, now 74, gushed, “Reggie is such a good dog … he is much loved.”

But for Nitto – who, before retiring, worked at a medical center’s off-site care facility for babies removed from their homes – Reggie’s care is nonnegotiable.The costs that are required to keep Reggie as healthy as possible are significant. At one point, insulin was costing Nitto $340 per month. The purpose of the program, launched in September by the Allentown-based nonprofit, is to provide financial assistance to qualified senior citizens, “making it possible to keep a senior dog in the home when financial challenges may otherwise make this too difficult,” according to the organization.

Monmouth County residents age 60 and older who have dogs age 7 or older and are on a fixed income are urged to apply for the assistance. Marty’s Place hopes to expand the program beyond Monmouth County in the spring.
