Estimates by a federal safety agency said New Jersey was among the top 10 states with the highest traffic death increases during the first two-thirds of 2022.

While the nation saw a decrease in fatal crashes during the first third of 2022, New Jersey was among the 10 states that saw the highest percentage of increased fatalities for the first nine months of the year, according to new estimates from theNew Jersey saw a 10.6% increase in the number of traffic deaths between January and September 2022, when compared to the same period in 2021, according to NHTSA estimates released on Monday.

New York State was estimated to see a 3.8% increase from 833 deaths estimated for the first nine months of 2021 to 865 in 2022, and a fatality rate that rose from 0.99 in 2021 to 1.01 per 100 million miles traveled. Delaware saw a 23.9% increase from 88 to 109 deaths between the first nine months of 2021 and 2022.

NHSTA projected that 25 states were estimated to have increases in fatalities in 2022 compared to 2021, while one state remained unchanged and 24 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico are predicted to have had decreased traffic deaths. That news shouldn’t be cause for celebration said safety advocates, since traffic deaths have been rising since 2020.
