The MTA board on Wednesday gave its final approval of congestion pricing, paving the way for the agency to charge drivers a $15 daytime toll to enter Manhattan south of 60th Street.
“I welcome the MTA’s affirmative vote on congestion pricing," Schwartz wrote in an email. "However, I’m keeping my champagne on ice until the lawsuits are resolved and no acts of Congress passed to block it and the first car is charged." A 25% toll hike on annual "gridlock alert days," which come during the U.N. General Assembly and around the holidays.
New Yorkers who earn $50,000 a year or less or are enrolled in an income-based assistance program can get half off the daytime toll after their first 10 trips into the zone every calendar month. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the vote did not spell an end to his fight against congestion pricing. The state of New Jersey filed a suit arguing congestion pricing should be blocked because it will result in more traffic and pollution in the Garden State. A hearing in the case is set for next week.
