HAYWARD — In a case that police allege is tied to a local methamphetamine dealer’s gang allegiances and suspicion about the victim, five people have been charged with beating a man to death outside a laundromat last year.
The victim, 25-year-old Yeison Toroc, was beaten severely on Oct. 4, 2021, and declared brain dead at a hospital three days later. Police say he died “at a later date”; brain death is considered legal death, even though organs can be supported mechanically after that declaration. Police allege that Navarro was a methamphetamine dealer who paid monthly “taxes” to the gang. In return, Navarro bought drugs to sell and gang members kept watch for him. Police say that Navarro admitted all this during an interview with detectives.
