Mother, daughter graduate Penn State together after taking far different paths

Updated: May. 12, 2024, 4:05 p.m.Renee and Clare Gibson of Lower Paxton Township are all smiles as they collect their graduation parchment from Penn State on the same day earlier this month.Perfect timing can take its own sweet time in the offing.

In a family where her father and grandfather hold PSU degrees, there was little doubt where Clare was headed after graduating from Central Dauphin High in 2020. “I thought it would be too much and take too long,” Renee recalled. “They came back with a plan for three years, taking one or two classes a semester. I said, ‘OK, we’ll try it.’”

“I was very concerned once I realized it,” said Renee, adding Clare already had her high school commencement damped during COVID-19. “She worked too hard. I just didn’t want to get int the way.” “It took so long to graduate, some of the people I love most weren’t able to be there,” she said. “I never thought I would do it.”

That could be anything from government or public policy work related to her field or a real adventure like going out west and studying the worsening wildfires ripping through states like California, Oregon and Arizona.
