A court is considering a request to put several allies of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny under house arrest as authorities work to stymie protests over the anti-corruption investigator’s jailing. Supporters are calling for rallies on Sunday.

FILE - In this Jan. 28, 2021, file photo, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny appears on a TV screen during a court hearing appealing his jailing, with an image of the Kremlin in the background in Moscow, Russia. Navalny was jailed when he arrived in Moscow on Jan. 17, after authorities accused him of violating the terms of his parole on a 2014 fraud conviction.

Navalny was jailed for 30 days after Russia’s prison service alleged he had violated the probation terms of his suspended sentence from a 2014 money-laundering conviction that he has rejected as politically motivated. On Thursday, a Moscow court rejected his appeal to be released, and another hearing next week could turn his 3 1/2-year suspended sentence into one he must serve in prison.

In a strong challenge to the Kremlin, demonstrations calling for Navalny’s release took place in more than 100 Russian cities on Jan. 23. Nearly 4,000 people were reportedly detained at those protests, and some were given fines and jail terms. Navalny’s arrest and the harsh police actions at the protests have brought wide criticism from the West and calls for his release.

The World is watching Moscow.

calling them 'courts' (in russia) is inaccurate to say the least. it also suggest that the process is legal and legitimate.

Do you think the American people will ever stand up against corruption with in their own country-governments?

Just as the BerlinWall fell down so it is our hope that Russia will reform.

So it's kinda like when Assange was illegally put in a supermax and his friend Ola Bini detained in Ecuador.

Vladimir Putin should not have arrested this guy. After poisoning him twice, which he survived, he’s like Rasputin reincarnated. Should have just let him go about his business, but Vlad is afraid of him for what he means to the people of Russia. I say free him and let him be.
