Jessica McNamee was so determined to play Sonya Blade in 'Mortal Kombat' that she kept making self-tapes until she found that winning formula

The actor also recalls agonizing over her self-tape to win the role, and shares what she knows about where her character goes next, should there be a sequel.Jessica McNamee was so determined to play Sonya Blade that she kept making self-tapes until she found that winning formula. While there have been many iterations of Blade since her introduction in 1992’svideo game by Midway, McNamee’s decision to add a bit of levity to the character proved to be a deciding factor.

So it was interesting. The footage that I watched was from the video game. I actually did a deep dive on YouTube and watched people playing the game. So I certainly took some liberty in giving her a bit more playfulness and lightness. She’s got this great relationship with her archnemesis Kano, as you see in the film, and I think that is so fun and exciting. There’s so much to play with in their relationship and dynamic.

Sonya has two opportunities to get a marking in the first and second acts of the movie, but she opts not to. What was holding her back? Why was she not willing to take the plunge at those points? As you mentioned, Sonya delivered a lot of the exposition about the world of Mortal Kombat. Do you dread exposition like most actors?

jessica_mcnamee Sonya Blade has been my main since i was 5 years old! 3 I'm 28 now and she's still my MAIN! LOVED UR SONYA!

Stop talking about it please that movie was trash ok

She was a perfect Sonya Blade, I was surprised that she portrayed the character so well

Thought you'd love to have a read JadeMorrisMMA & have a watch of this

Love the energy but she didn't do much or had much to do with the character in the movie. We need a sequel asap

Josh Lawson’s one liners were brilliant, so Australian with an American accent.

It worked, and really showed off! Best Sonya ever. I hope she’s a huge part of the inevitable sequel!

jessica_mcnamee She was perfect! I can't wait to see more of her in the sequels and spinoffs based of her name.

Probably the worst acting I've seen on film. Holy shit was it bad

The dedication of Actors no matter how big or small the role is.💙

jessica_mcnamee Any relationship with Cage will virtually by definition be a rom-com with Sonya as the 'straight man' half of it, so I can only hope to see that hilarity on screen.

She still sucked as Sonya Blade

in summary: she STUDIED for the assignment! Go off, Blade! 💕💕 *laser noises*
