The production of Mortal Kombat 2 is now underway, with some villain additions to the sequel already setting up a third film in the franchise.

The new villains set to appear in Mortal Kombat 2 prove that the filmmakers are already setting up a third film. Mortal Kombat was a reboot of the film franchise based on the video game series of the same name and was released in 2021. Despite not having an overwhelmingly successful box office run due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mortal Kombat became HBO Max's most successful launch film, earning a viewership number of 3.8 million in its first weekend.

Shao Kahn & Quan Chi Could Align With Mortal Kombat's Shang Tsung In the Mortal Kombat game series, Shao Kahn often serves as one of the primary antagonists. Shao Kahn is usually depicted as the Emperor of Outworld, serving as one of the most powerful sorcerers in the entire franchise, hence his infamous nature as one of Mortal Kombat's main villains. Similarly, Quan Chi is another famous Mortal Kombat villain, though not on the same level as Shao Kahn.

Quan Chi Sets Up Shinnok For Mortal Kombat 3 While Shao Kahn's involvement could set up him eventually becoming the main villain of the series due to his power in the game franchise, Quan Chi's role in Mortal Kombat 2 could introduce the game series' other primary antagonist: Shinnok. Shinnok is essentially the Devil in the Mortal Kombat games, an Elder god and the ruler of the Netherrealm.
